Death Benefit available to an employee who was on the Bell Atlantic payroll as of August 1986:
Life insurance is one years salary at the time of death or what the salary was when you retired. Benefit begins reducing at the age of 65 and goes to 1/2 of your salary at the age of 70. It does not reduce any more than 50% of the years of salary at the time you retired. The death benefit would also be a years salary but no more than $39,000.00 That amount does not reduce with age. The company does not inform members of this benefit so you must call the Benefits Center and ask for this benefit and ask them to send you a certificate acknowledging this benefit for your records. Family member has 1 year from time of death to collect this benefit. Be sure to be persistent when calling benefits as you may get someone not familiar with this benefit. This is a LIFE EVENT to report a DEATH .

Condolences to you.

It would be helpful to know which operating company your father worked for since any responses based on, for example, GTE might not fit if your father had worked for New England Tel.

Understand too that "life insurance" and "death benefit" are two different things here. The death benefit was something that some/all operating companies provided under certain circumstances, whereas life insurance beyond the 1x salary was something the individual employee could to decide to pay for. The beneficiary of the death benefit can ONLY be the spouse, while the beneficiar(ies) of the life insurance could be anyone the employee chose.

I emailed marc reed & mcadam recently bout the NYNEX Basic Life Ins benefit which was $35,000 after age 65 (including the max 50% reduction). I had the paperwork from 1996 and sent them a copy. They dumped me to the "benefits consultants" to whom they've offloaded responsibility for retirees. They, of course, notified me that verizon had abrocated this benefit when they "merged" with GTE. Now the max is $10,000. Stealing our pensions & benefits was not enough. They also need to pick the bones.

Hey cos101, when did they say they notified retirees of the change?

Verizon "Eyes on Financial Security" (pretty funny, huh? Funny as a knee to the groin) effective 1/1/2002 - pgs. 24 & 27 specifically. Brought to you by seidenberg, mcadam, reed, sacco and a host of other snakes who wound up with MY financial security ...
