CD ladders in IRA?

Postby phoneman55 on Sat Feb 23, 2019 9:30 am

Hi all, I'm just wondering this morning if CD ladders are allowed in an IRA or the company 401k, and if so what's your opinion on doing that? If it matters I have Fidelity for both. Thanks in advance.

I have some in my IRA. For me it's kind of a safety of principle issue. Some CD's can yield a favorable return depending on current conditions in the market. IMO Most do not. I use them for a safety issue only, nothing out longer than 4-5 years. Then as interest rates change I have an opportunity to just roll over, invest in something else or use the cash as part of my RMD.
I use Raymond James with a financial adviser.

You can in an IRA. The reason for transferring retirement funds from a 401k to an IRA is so additional options like CDs & Corp Bonds (not bond funds - rather specific bonds) are available, as are stocks, etc.

Transferring is super easy if you go 100% to an IRA.
